We are delighted to announce the arrival of three gorgeous Rhea chicks hatched at Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park in Poole, Dorset!
The females lay their eggs every other day, anywhere around the enclosure! It’s then the male Rheas job to collect up the eggs and roll them into the nest where he sits on them throughout the whole incubation period, which can be between 35 – 40 days.
Back in July 2012, Zena from our Animal Barn popped a big yellow egg in her airing cupboard. She kept the egg safe and warm and then one day this gorgeous blonde bird hatched out! “Babba” the female Rhea then moved in to Farmer Palmer’s house for 3 months for lots of cuddles on the sofa and lots of cleaning up for Farmer Palmer! When the time was right we introduced Babba to the farm park and got her some male company; Rex. Babba and Rex were then ‘married’ and the rest, as they say, is history!
We have moved the three new born little chicks into the Animal Barn now to give them the very best start and to keep them nice and warm and safe from the unpredictable British weather. We are hand-rearing them until they learn how to be independent, taking them on daily walks around the farm park to help them build up their strength. Once fully feathered and about a meter in height we will introduce them back into the Rhea enclosure with the others. Stay tuned into Farmer Palmer’s Facebook Page for more photos coming soon.
